Come to Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve to celebrate World Environment Day 2011 with free walks! Also, fascinating talks by Dr Chua Ee Kiam and N. Sivasothi. And lots more activities for everyone from ages 5 to 55. Including a chance to nurture your very own mangrove sapling!

“Making of Wetlands in the City” a talk on the making of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve coffeetable book by Dr. Chua Ee Kiam. Dr. Chua will share his experiences in making Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve coffeetable book. Listen to his behind-the-scenes take on how he was able to capture the essence and beauty of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. His other books include Nature in Singapore – Ours to Protect, Pulau Ubin, Ours to Treasure, Chek Jawa – Discovering Singapore’s Biodiversity and Borneo’s Tropical Eden – Sabah.

“Amazing World of Mangrove ; Fascinating encounters, stories of smooth-coated otters, monitor lizards, estuarine crocodiles, tree-climbing crabs & crab-eating snakes from the Singapore mangrove” a talk by by N. Sivasothi. Going by his nickname Otterman, Siva will share secrets and explore with you the fascinating world of mangrove. A strong advocate for conservation and especially Singapore biodiversity, Siva has always have a soft spot for mangrove. Be captivated as he shares his amazing experiences as he explores the world of mangrove.
Time: 11am-12noon

Other activities

  • The Art of paper folding (of nature): Learn to make origami flying cranes, have a frog race, or even make a fish from paper folding
  • Glass painting: Don’t throw away glass bottles. Re-using old glass bottles and turn them into beautiful pieces of art.
  • Pebble painting: Transform boring pebbles into works of art. Learn to paint and discover how a simple pebble can be a art piece
  • SPROUT: Adopt a Baby Mangrove, A tree adoption programme. Young mangrove saplings can be adopted to be nurtured in your home. Water them, provide them with sunlight, and when they are older, re-plant them at Sungei Buloh. An excellent tool to teach the young on how delicate and fragile our baby mangrove trees are, but when the trees are older, they will repay the care by providing shelter, food and many more to a wide range of inhabitants. Replanting will be scheduled during the International Coastal Clean-up Singapore week.
Entry charges: While some activities are free, admission fees to the Reserve apply: $1 per adult, 50cents per child/student/senior citizen.
