25 Mar (Sun): Talk on "Nature outreach on the internet: does it work?"

I'll be giving this talk to share my experience running the wildsingapore resources which includes websites, blogs, flickr and facebook.
Together, these have garnered nearly 4 million hits over the last 7 years. I will share what I have been doing and some of the results, highlight what works and what doesn't.

Following a short presentation, I hope participants can also share experiences so together, we can learn more about nature outreach through the world wild web!

This session is intended for those already doing or considering efforts at nature outreach through social media and other web resources. You do not need a technical understanding of these resources. The session will NOT cover the mechanics of setting up resources (if there is interest, a separate session can be set up for this). I will try to explain the broad principles and issues in layman terms so ordinary people can understand what can be done on the web.

Speaker profile

Ria Tan is just an ordinary person who is passionate about Singapore's wild places. She runs the wildsingapore web resources which are intended to be a one-stop location for those who want to learn about our wild places; and do more for them. She runs and funds these resources alone. These include the wildsingapore website, wildsingapore news (daily updates) and wildsingapore happenings (weekly updates) and an online guide to Singapore's common marine life with hundreds of fact sheets. She also has more than 20,000 photos on wildsingapore flickr for free download and she blogs nearly daily at wild shores of singapore. Major facebook resources include the Celebrating Singapore's Biodiversity facebook page. She works closely with NParks on several projects including TeamSeagrass and the Mega Marine Survey of Singapore which includes maintaining comprehensive web resources for these projects.
