Otterly exciting at Pasir Ris with the Naked Hermit Crabs

We saw an otter! Fabulous families with awesome guides had a great time at the free guided walk at Pasir Ris mangrove boardwalk with the Naked Hermit Crabs.

We also saw a Shore pit viper! And lots of other interesting mangrove wildlife.

Despite the drizzle, the enthusiastic families went ahead with the walk. Rain does bring out the animals such as giant Tree climbing crabs. And soon, the rain stopped!

"It's a bus stop" one of the kids remark. A good spot for a small group photo.

The boardwalk goes through the lush mangrove forest that has been allowed to regenerate on this reclaimed shore.

Ley Kun showed us a very well camouflaged Shore pit viper spotted by Sankar! Thanks to Ley Kun for staying back until the last group (mine) came by so we all could see this amazing animal.

Here's a photo of the snake by Mohammad Juhari.

Other interesting finds included enormous Giant mudskippers, each in the 'swimming pool' that they created, digging it out one mouthful of mud at a time.

The 'jetty' over Sungei Tampines at the end of our walk is a great place to spot all kinds of creatures.

From birds to fishes to a Malayan monitor lizard crawling into a tree hole!

But the most exciting encounter was with an otter that swam up towards the jetty. At first we thought it was a monitor lizard! I managed to catch a short clip of the otter (and excited families!)

At the jetty, the kids also have fun drawing about our trip.

Thanks to Chen Xi for organising the walk. To the awesome guides, and to Sean for having us all over to his home for a delicious home-cooked meal.

It has been a long time since the Naked Hermit Crabs did a walk at Pasir Ris! Our last walk was in Dec 2015! Check out the Naked Hermit Crab blog for their latest monthly free walks for families.

The Pasir Ris mangroves are just 10 minutes from Pasir Ris MRT and just next to DownTown East. It has educational and interesting panels so you can explore it on your own. It is the only mangrove boardwalk that is open 24/7. A night trip to here can be quite amazing. And here's more about why Pair Ris mangroves are so awesome.
